Step-by-Step Process

  1. Determine your vehicle category. Confirm your vehicle weighs 3.5t or less (vignette required). Heavier vehicles use GO-Maut.
  2. Choose vignette type. Select 10-day, 2-month, or annual based on your travel duration. Use the Selection Matrix if unsure.
  3. Choose format. Decide between digital (plate-linked) or physical sticker.
  4. Select purchase channel. Online (ASFINAG), petrol station, Trafik, border crossing, or automobile club.
  5. Complete purchase. For digital: enter plate number, choose start date, pay. For physical: buy sticker, scratch off start date.
  6. Activate vignette. Digital: active from 00:00 on start date. Physical: attach to windscreen before entering motorway.
  7. Verify activation. For digital: check ASFINAG website with your plate number. For physical: confirm sticker is correctly attached.
  8. Keep records. Save purchase confirmation email or receipt throughout the validity period.
  9. Check expiry. Monitor validity period, especially for 10-day and 2-month vignettes. Purchase renewal before expiry.

Digital Vignette: Detailed Process

  1. Visit the official ASFINAG website (asfinag.at) or use the ASFINAG app.
  2. Select "Digital Vignette" and choose your vignette type (10-day, 2-month, annual).
  3. Enter your vehicle registration plate number exactly as it appears on your registration document.
  4. Select your desired start date (today or up to 30 days in advance).
  5. Review the order summary and confirm the plate number is correct.
  6. Complete payment using your preferred method (card, PayPal, etc.).
  7. Receive confirmation email. Save this email as your proof of purchase.
  8. The vignette is automatically registered in the ASFINAG database and becomes active at 00:00 on the start date.

Physical Sticker: Detailed Process

  1. Purchase the sticker at an authorised retailer (petrol station, Trafik, border crossing).
  2. The retailer will scratch off the start date on the sticker at the point of sale.
  3. Before entering the motorway, clean the attachment area on the inner side of your windscreen (top-left corner, behind the rear-view mirror).
  4. Carefully remove the protective film from the sticker.
  5. Press the sticker firmly onto the clean, dry windscreen surface.
  6. Do NOT attach the sticker to the outside of the windscreen, to a removable sun visor, or to any surface other than the windscreen glass.
  7. Keep your purchase receipt throughout the validity period.

After Purchase: What to Expect

Once your vignette is active, you can use all ASFINAG-managed motorways and expressways freely without stopping at toll booths. ASFINAG's automated camera systems will verify your digital vignette by reading your registration plate. Physical stickers are verified by enforcement officers during roadside checks.

Remember that certain tunnels and mountain passes require additional separate tolls even with a valid vignette. Always check your route in advance using the ASFINAG route planner.

Complaints & Appeals

If you believe you have received an unjustified fine or have a complaint about the vignette system, the following process applies:

  1. Contact ASFINAG first: Call 0800 400 12 400 (free from Austria) or write to ASFINAG's customer service. Provide your registration plate, date of travel, and details of the issue.
  2. Submit in writing: For formal complaints, submit a written letter or email to ASFINAG's complaints department. Include all relevant documentation (purchase confirmation, photos, etc.).
  3. Response time: ASFINAG aims to respond to complaints within 30 days.
  4. Administrative appeal: If unsatisfied with ASFINAG's response, you may file an appeal with the relevant district administrative authority (Bezirksverwaltungsbehörde).
  5. Ombudsman: For unresolved disputes, the Austrian Ombudsman Board (Volksanwaltschaft) can be contacted.
  6. What to include: Registration plate, date and time of alleged offence, location, your contact details, and any supporting evidence.
  7. Deadlines: Appeals against administrative fines must typically be filed within 4 weeks of the fine notice.
  8. Legal representation: For fines exceeding €500, consider consulting a lawyer specialising in Austrian traffic law.
